Now some of you may now be thinking what is NLP? Very simply NLP enables us to understand how our brain works to be able to improve our performance and our ability to achieve our goals; its also an amazing set of tools that will help you influence and persuade with your communications. I attended my Practitioner Course initially as I wanted to be able to use these tool in business and found a whole lot more, its true to say that it actually changed my life enabling me in ways I hadn’t imagined.

An important consideration regarding any training is what do you want to achieve from the course? Once you have decided this it can be discussed with the trainers that you are considering. A good trainer will be able to help you refine and develop this as you work through the course. NLP is about personal development, and the focus of the course should be on you, to help you achieve your goals.

NLP is an experiential rather than theoretical discipline and many people find that it only makes sense once they have an experience of the training. With that in mind it is critical that potential students find out about the calibre and quality of the training, the trainers and their capabilities before signing up for any courses.

Many people, especially at this time have limited funds for training; professional training is measured by the quality of the course and the skill of the trainers. If your choice is regulated by price you can’t expect the same quality as with other courses.

Consider too the size of the class, some group are larger than others and whereas some people will learn in a large group others prefer smaller groups. Also, in the smaller groups the focus is more on your agenda and its easier to get assistance from the trainers.

My advice is to look on line and create a list of those trainers who you are drawn to. Call their offices and assure yourself that you are making the right choice and remember NLP is experiential and someone may be able to talk about NLP, use all the right words but can they actually use these skills. The best NLP Trainers use NLP to teach NLP, leading their students by example.

www.aventesi.com

Whats inside your head?

What’s inside your head?

The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures this year were all about the brain and how we process information and how our reality is not always what it seems. Everything that we are is a product of our brain and how we think. Each brain is unique and yet the same in the way that it functions.

All human beings have a brain, and yet how many of us actually know how it works and how to make it work for us? Who is controlling your brain? When you consider how much of our lives depend on what we do (how we respond), and what we do is a response of how we think, it makes sense for us to take control of our brain and yet how many people actually do this?

The brain is an electrical system with around 100 billion neurons sending electrical signals; which can be disrupted by electromagnetic pulses. This years lecturer, Professor Bruce Hood, demonstrated how, by stimulating certain areas of the brain with an electromagnetic pulse, you could disrupt thought patterns. With his first demonstration his demo subject was unable to speak, to repeat a simple nursery rhyme, another demonstration showed how the ability to perform a simple task like clapping was suddenly impossible as he fired off the pulse.

When we are born, we have all our neurons although not all of them are connected. In fact as a new born baby very few neurons are connected, these connections take place as we grow and begin to experience the world around us. If we never experience events the connections never occur, and the brain begins to prune neurons that are unused. If we don’t use our brain, our neural connections, we really do loose them.

The early connections we make can stay with us all our lives with certain things triggering specific responses. In NLP speak anchors are created from the very beginning as the brain learns from associating, creating different patterns/responses. For example listening to Brenda Lee singing Rocking Around the Christmas Tree immediately takes me back to being a child at the family Christmas Party. I begin to feel good inside and smile at all those wonderful memories.

Our brains are adaptive and we all have the potential to learn. At the first stage of learning, we store information in our short term memory. Our mind can be easily distracted and its easier to remember something with structure, something that creates a pattern. That’s why memory aids like mind maps and mnemonics are so effective. Without any structure people tend to remember information from the beginning and the end of a presentation much easier; and anything novel that grabs our attention.

Learning takes place whenever we recall experiences from the past, this creates electrical activity in the neurons and you begin to recognise patterns. With each repetition your brain becomes familiar with the information and you begin to expect it. For example when you learn to drive, initially having so much to consciously think about, steering the car, gears, clutch (if in a manual vehicle), checking the mirrors, watching the road ahead; and then at some point all this became automatic. So much so that you can now drive without much conscious thought to what you are doing at all.

Whilst we recall the information we are working on transferring this information into our long term memory, our Hippocampus. It has been found that London Cab Drivers Hippocampi is enlarged and this is thought to be due to the large amount of information they have to remember.

Our memories are fluid, each time you remember something you have to reconstruct the representation you created in your brain. Each memory having various elements to it, you may remember the way that something looked and you have an image come to mind; or maybe you are remembering what was said and replay a conversation in your mind imagining who said what and how.

Our brain represents our experiences visually, auditorally and kinaesthetically, through tastes and smells, creating patterns inside our memory banks, our brains are continually interpreting experiences looking within its data base to find a connection, a pattern that it understands. Try this experiment, mouth the words “Elephant Juice” to someone they will probably lip read this as I love you.

Look at the picture below.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4D9GCjnk848/TwHcPvnxjEI/AAAAAAAAACk/jltBBIorJJg/s320/woman%253Ahag.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693073567012457538" />

What do you see?

Some people see an old hag whilst others will see a young woman. What you are aware of being created by your brain. And once you become aware of both the hag and the young woman suddenly they are both obvious.

We are aware of what we pay attention to. People who are anxious or fearful are only conscious of their anxiety or fear and the more they pay attention to this, the more fearful/anxious they are. Representing their world in a particular way. Taking something perfectly ordinary and safe and turning it into something completely different in their imagination.

Whereas people who are successful set high goals and are motivated to complete them; they have a different focus of attention expecting happiness, fulfilment, success, joy and a sense of accomplishment.

Our minds are bombarded with information all the time, so much information that it is impossible for us to focus on everything and so the brain has to decide what information to block out. And so we delete somethings; this means that at times we can miss something that is happening right in front of us as our focus of attention is elsewhere.

Apart from the deleting, as we review the world through our eyes there is yet more distortion and what we see is not necessarily what is there. We only ever process the central part of our vision as the edges are very blurred. Yet we see clearly, to enable us to do this we move our eyes around 4/5 times per second; this is how we create a clear picture of what is around us. If we were aware of these eye movements our vision would be very strange indeed, so our brain stops any visual input each time we move our eyes.

As an experiment look into a mirror to see if you are aware of this, ask someone else to watch for your eye movements too. You will find that you are unaware of the movement whilst you brain stops the visual signals whilst the person with you will be able to see your eyes moving.

With all that deleting and distorting going on its surprising that we know what reality really is.

When I first began to study NLP I was amazed that I had found a way to control my brain; I had found the handbook for the mind and it was easily understood and very simple to use.

Do you know how to control your brain?

NLP Practitioner and Practitioner Plus Training February 2012 details available www.aventesi.com

www.tina-taylor.com

Stop #Smoking MasterCLASS

I once heard a man say “if you have to cut of your head to stop smoking – do it. Yet even with all of the myths and hype, hypnosis continues to be something of a curiosity for many.

Over the years hypnosis has been found to be effective in many fields from Entertainment with the hypnotic stage and TV shows, Therapy helping people overcome many problems within their lives and in recent years as a tool for influence in business and marketing. Many successful business people are attending classes on Hypnosis each year (many of these put through the invoice as influencing skills).

You may be wondering how hypnosis can help in a business context, one reason is that through learning the process and the basic principles of hypnosis it enables you to expand on your own ability to communicate effectively.

People from a wide background including business coaches, sales managers, account directors, accountants and HR executives attend courses to learn how to influence their client base hypnotically each year. It improves their communication skills; for example personal development, presenting, sales, consulting, leadership and negotiation. And also teaches you how to build on your intuition and creativity.

The skills you learn within the hypnosis framework map across to business so easily; agreeing outcomes, developing rapport (leading as well as pacing), use of language and the impact of metaphor. Incorporating hypnotic skills in your business communications will enable you to increase your success at negotiation and persuasion.

Top salespeople seem to have something special when communicating with their clients, they command attention, build trust, their clients respect them and they manage to create unforgettable impressions and to close sales. How do they do this? By using conversational hypnosis. Linguists have studied the patterns within their communication and found top salespeople, negotiators and skilled lawyers all use similar forms of indirect hypnosis; and yet many of these people can not explain how they do what they do.

Many people are surprised to learn that many types of hypnosis occur nearly everyday. By learning these techniques you can learn how to increase your ability to influence others. When you communicate a message hypnotically that message is more likely to bypass the listeners conscious defenses. The hypnotic message goes more directly to the prospects subconscious mind.

Tina Taylor
Licensed Master Trainer of NLP

Next Hypnosis seminar 24 to 30 September at Kingston check out http://www.aventesi.com/hypnosis_certification.htm for details

Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy and NLP

There has been a lot of discussion on various sites about the legal requirements of being a Hypnotherapist/NLP Practitioner/Coach; and there is a lot of conflicting advice being given at the moment.

Some people seem to be focusing on what they think has brought us to this point. I think the problem stems from the fact that currently anyone can call themselves a hypnotherapist/coach etc and begin practicing without having had any training at all – there aren’t any guidelines (rules) in place to regulate us which has probably led to people attending a very short course in Hypnosis/NLP/Coaching or one of the other lesser knows “therapies” and think to themselves now I can change my career and set up my consultancy.

However it doesn’t really matter how we got here, surely its more important that we move forward and find a way for us to continue with the great work that we have begun whilst finding acceptance and dare I say it acknowledgement from the powers that be.

The Hypnotism Act of 1952 regulates the demonstration of hypnotic phenomena for the purpose of public entertainment; and there is legal guidance in the use of hypnosis for the Crown Prosecution Services but nothing so far for the Hypnotherapist etc. Well nothing explicit but we are governed by International Law in that we have a duty of care towards our clients and need to follow the guidelines set out by the Advertising Standards Agency when marketing.

When I first started my studies back in the 90’s there was a lot of discussion within the various Hypnosis Societies regarding government legislation that we would have to abide by; and even now those Societies have pulled together to take part in a Government Review of Hypnosis within the UK. Various rules being discussed that we will probably need to adhere to at some point, and will mean that any training taken will need to follow a certain path.

Those already established will find that we need to have so many hours each year of continuous personal development training as well as supervision once a month to name but a couple of regulations that have been discussed. These regulations are already in existence within a few of the Hypnosis Societies in the UK already in readiness for the changes.

www.aventesi.com for training in NLP/Coaching and Hypnosis

New Year - New You?

I wonder how many people will use this magical time – New Years Eve to make a resolution to be different in the new year.

Have you ever wondered where New Years Resolutions come from?

New Years celebrations are the oldest in our history, its believed we have celebrated the new year for over 4,000 years although we didn’t start to make resolutions till the Romans. Through many religious beliefs it is traditional to reflect on our wrongdoings and seek forgiveness. The concept is one of self improvement.

I gave up making new years eve resolutions years ago, like many people I’d write down my resolution keep it for a few days then go back to my previous behaviour. Then I’d feel bad as I hadn’t managed to keep to it, most of my friends did exactly the same thing. In fact one of them had been making the same resolution for years and years each time hoping that she would stick to it. She said things like maybe this will be my year, as if it was the new year that brought the changes she looked for.

A few years ago I was having a heart to heart with a good friend, and it turned into a giant whinge. As we moaned about relationships, our kids, time, stress, money etc etc etc. Sound familiar? After a while I got fed up with the vision of misery we were creating, each moan making us feel worse and worse inside.

So many people talk about, focus on, whats wrong with their lives.

So I stopped made some fresh coffee and we began to make a list about what was right with our lives and what we could do to make things better, and I decided to turn my life upside down. Now I don’t mean any positions that include my feet being higher than my head but turning my thinking upside down.

So now I work towards goals. I think about what I want – then check a few things including is it really what I want, will it be good for me and is it sustainable by me alone. I try it on (imagine) how it will be, what effect it will have on my life and those closest to me. Then if it passes all the tests I map out what I need to do to achieve my goal, and now I find that I do actually achieve my goals.

This is not a new idea, spiritual beliefs are based on counting our blessings; and theres a great side effect too. The more I focus on what is right, the better I feel, thus enabling me to think more clearly and make better decisions helping me to feel better.

Tina
www.tina-taylor.com

Overcoming Barriers to Learning

In this day and age there are opportunities for learning all around us; many people say they want a career change and some of these need to learn new skills possibly go back to college or university. Some of these are lucky enough to have companies who will assist them in their quest; the workplace can provide excellent opportunities for learning and continuous personal development.

Many review opportunities and never get started; whilst others start, they begin full of enthusiasm, excited at the prospect of creating a new future then something happens that stops them.

Firstly, let’s examine, what is learning? It is a physical process, some may argue that it is a mental process and this is the traditional way of defining learning. Yet when thoughts occur, something physical happens to us. When external events take place, physical processes take place in our bodies in reaction to them; these processes establish memories, reinforce or create behaviours and beliefs and change our physiology.

Our learning begins before birth, taking place in our development and continues throughout our lives. In the beginning we learn how to control movement, to feed and communicate with others; learning who we are and about the world around us. And it is here that we may learn other things, beliefs about ourselves, things that we inadvertently pick up from those around us.

For example: “I can’t dance”
“I’m not musical/artistic”
“I can’t spell”
“I can’t change”
“I always fail”
“I’m stupid”

These are just a few statements that people may learn about themselves, beliefs that hold them back limiting their self development. Beliefs that were learnt physically then metaphorically into their bodies through individual experience.

Can these beliefs be un-learned? Certainly and generally very quickly using various NLP techniques.

What we believe about ourselves can easily influence our ability to think and learn; this can also be influenced by the mood that we are in, our state. Our states serve as a filter for the information that we receive; when learning our physical and mental state is just as important as the level of training and information delivered. Discovering your learning state and how to access it will enable you to get yourself into the appropriate state as and when required.

As well as having a state that best suits the learning process people have individual learning styles that they have developed. For example some people prefer to be shown how to do something, learning by watching or reading; whereas others prefer to be told how to do something, learning by listening and discussion; and then there are those who learn best by doing, they like to try things out.

From the NLP perspective learning styles can be either paced or lead, as a tutor/trainer the information can be presented in a way that matches the person’s preferred way of learning; as well as helping the person to enrich their learning style by helping them strengthen their other senses. Recognizing peoples natural learning styles is an important skill for all communicators, and can enhance the effectiveness and ease with which they can influence their listeners.

Many people today are discovering that NLP is a powerful tool that can be used for personal development as well as in the business arena. Teaching techniques that enable us to get the best out of others as well as ourselves providing strategies for coping with and managing those difficult moments in life.

Much can be learned from books but NLP is experiential and learning from a skilled trainer is invaluable.

Come along to our practice group www.nlpmasterclass.co.uk to experience NLP for yourself.

Tina Taylor
www.tina-taylor.com

Tranceformation

I have just returned from assisting on the NLP Summer Program as part of the La Valle Team with Dr Richard Bandler, John & Kathleen La Valle in Orlando.

I love the tranceformation the students make throughout the seminars, and remember at the end of my practitioner training oh many years ago now, Dr Bandler looked out at the audience and said “who are you guys”. He mentioned how different we were from day one, at the time I hadn’t realised exactly what he meant.

Then when I began assisting in 2000 I suddenly realised what he meant and as I began to run my own trainings I love to watch the moment when a student has the ah ha moment. When they realise that actually you can control your thoughts and feelings, that you create your own reality.

On day 1 as they arrive some are excited, some reserved in their responses and there are those who are looking for some specific technique that will help them with a certain problem. Gradually as the course progresses I see people run a gambit of responses, generally going through a phases of being confused, then theres a point (the ah ha moment) when they begin to realise that NLP can be used in all aspects of their life enabling them to make changes in their lives in whatever way they want to.

When I attended my Practitioner course I did so without really knowing what NLP was; I was (like many people I’m sure) hoping to learn how to improve my communication skills in business. At the end of the course I knew that I felt more relaxed, confident and better able to deal with the day to day challenges in the office at that point I hadn't realised what else I had learned.

Looking at those faces on the last day, so much more confident, clear in their minds; I like millions of participants got so much more from the courses than I originally expected and continue to do so.

www.tina-taylor.com

How Do You Meet Your Clients Expectations

How do you meet your clients expectations of trance?

Many people decide to try hypnosis because everything else has failed them. Some have been to other hypnotists and because of the experience they had think they may not be hypnotisable; others are looking for that magic spell that will just take away their problems.

There are so many misconceptions as to what trance is and how it will feel; and lots of clients learn what they “know” about trance and hypnosis from what they have seen on TV, in movies, or experienced from a stage hypnosis show. I’ve lost count of the number of people who have asked me if I will make them cluck like a chicken.

How do you meet your clients expectations?

If they have been to see a hypnotist previously; I ascertain what their experience was. This way if they had a good experience I know what works and can utilise that; and if what happened before didn’t work for them – I know what not to do.

If this is to be their first awareness of going into trance or they believe they can’t be or haven’t been hypnotised previously I ensure that I find out from them, what they think trance is. So many people believe that going into trance means they can’t hear or feel anything .......... This is the perfect opportunity for you to set up the session, to give a brief explanation of hypnosis and how they may feel; this is also a great time to begin your trance induction. Remembering to utilise those embedded commands; analogue marking and those language patterns.

Just last week one of my clients, who had been to a couple of hypnotherapists previously, said she was worried that no one could hypnotise her. She had obsessive thoughts going round and round in her head; she had told herself repeatedly “not to think ......................”, “don’t do that”, and other helpful thoughts like “I’m going to have this for the rest of my life”. Her mind was so full of thoughts connected with her obsession that unsurprisingly she had no time to focus on her business, her family or anything else.

She hadn’t believed that she had been hypnotised before because she said she hadn’t relaxed, the more the hypnotists told her to relax the more her muscles tensed up; and she had been able to hear everything that was being said and how she wasn’t surprised that this happened because everyone knew how difficult it was to hypnotise someone who was deaf in one ear; and how frustrating that was because she knew that the only way she was to get rid of this problem was through hypnosis.

Whilst discussing these thoughts with her, I began explaining about trance and hypnosis, started to inoculate against misconceptions and began my trance induction and very soon she closed her eyes and went inside. When she opened her eyes she said she felt very relaxed; and was surprised to find that she had had her eyes closed for some time when she thought she had only closed her eyes for a moment. She was even more surprised when she couldn’t get those thoughts back no matter how hard she tried; and said that she had never expected trance to feel so good.

Now going back to those people who ask if I will make them cluck like a chicken – I usually ask them what a chicken sounds like; and when they cluck I say apparently I can.

www.tina-taylor.com for details on private sessions with Tina and www.aventesi.com for details of training courses run by Tina with Steve Crabb including NLP Practitioner; Hypnosis and Life Coaching; as well as a Diploma Course ratified by the General Hypnotherapy Council.

Bah Humbug

Peoples responses never cease to amaze and entertain me; just recently at the NLP Masterclass December practice group meeting, I met a very angry security guard...........

As this was our last meeting of the year and Christmas is nearly upon us we decided to make it seasonal, designing exercises for people to practice with a party theme; musical trance and pass the parcel to name but a few. We also took in some seasonal refreshments to begin the holiday celebrations; a few mince pies, sherry and some soft drinks.

Unfortunately, this was apparently against the rules of the University as was very aggressively explained to us by the security guard and communication between us began to break down rather rapidly. We weren’t on the same wavelength; for a while it was as if we were speaking two completely different languages..........

Mmmmm a wonderful opportunity to practice what I teach! Now how can I get him to communicate with me, where do I need to go to meet him before I can lead him out of this?

Apparently “no one was allowed to bring in food and drink”. Ah I recognised that language pattern “No one?” “No one”. “Not even the catering staff? Not even a bottle of drinking water?”

Having broken down the generalisations; I began to chunk up until Adrian and I were at the same position and we began to communicate. Once that point was met we were able to come to an agreement and after some negotiation the seasonal meeting went ahead as planned.

How many times have you come across someone like Adrian? Situations like this give you the perfect opportunity to practice your language and skills of persuasion. I searched on line and decided on a college that seemed to be genuine and there are so many to choose from. Graduates from the courses I choose could apply for an NHS number which seemed to indicate that it was authentic and would offer first class training. I had already completed my NLP Practitioner course and was excited at the prospect of furthering my experience and knowledge.

Imagine my surprise on the first day to find that the lecturers read the notes to us and that we were expected to use scripts to work with our clients. How can you calibrate to your clients needs and responses if you are reading a script? The lecturers also didn’t seem to know the subjects very well, and often if asked questions had to get back to us.

Over the many years since I started training and working with private clients I am often asked where people can go to learn hypnosis, or more accurately to learn about what I do. Last year Steve and I began discussing the possibility of running a hypnosis and coaching diploma to begin to teach people how we work with clients. We wanted to insure that our courses were recognised as producing excellent therapists and coaches and so began to look at the various memberships of societies and into what was required by us for them to recognise our courses.

Currently there is no one governing body, no legal requirement for hypnotherapists, coaches and NLP practitioners to have obtained a certain level of training and experience before they begin to practice. There are several societies who are supposed to have excellent practitioners as their members and so we looked at their criteria and took this into account when designing our courses.

Something that occurred to both of us is that recognition by these societies depends not on the quality of the training provided but on the number of study hours each student spends.

The government has been talking about setting up a governing body; certain rules and regulations for hypnotherapists, coaches and NLP Practitioners for some time now. I suppose at some point this will change and there will be rules for us to comply with; I do hope that at this point some form of quality control will be introduced to improve the training available also.

www.tina-taylor.com

How to Choose a Coach

Nowadays with the business executive needing so many skills to keep on top of his very busy schedule, many are seeking the help of a coach to achieve the right balance in their lives; and with so many coaches offering their services how do you choose the right coach for you?

A business coach provides you with advice and guidance; this is usually based on their own experiences and capabilities. It pays to take the time to find the coaching that's right for you.

There are essential areas of understanding in the business coaching relationship.

For example; Does your prospective coach understand what you need from them and more importantly, can they deliver what you want to the business coaching relationship?

A few questions to ask yourself before selecting a coach:
1. What will having a coach give me?
2. What experience does my coach need?
3. Does the prospective coaches CV and referrals reflect that experience?
4. What do I want? What is my desired outcome?
a. What will having this outcome get me do for me?
5. Can this coach help me achieve my goals?
6. Are you willing to take the advice given and follow through?

A clear understanding of the process that will be used and what is expected of you is vital to ensure you are happy with the business coaching process.

1. What techniques, if any, will be used ie NLP.
2. Is there a set process to follow, is the relationship based on a fixed program or will they program be designed for you.
3. What demands are there, for example are there books that you will be asked to read.
4. How often will your progress be reviewed?
a. And what does that entail?

Then there are environmental factors to be considered, in this context that means any elements that may influence the relationship.

For example
1. Is the coaching to be face to face, by skype or telephone?
2. Can you call at any time for a quick discussion?
3. If you email will you get a prompt reply?
4. Is weekend contact allowed?
5. How often will they contact you as a part of the regular coaching process?
6. Will you be locked into an agreement for a fixed period of time and or money?
7. Finally, is this coach worth the money they are charging? This is easy as
if you have followed the steps above you will already know the answer.

www.tina-taylor.com

What does NLP do?

Whilst in Orlando as a support trainer to Dr Richard Bandler and John La Valle a few of the participants on the practitioner course asked me “What does NLP give me?”
My first response was NLP can’t give me anything as it doesn't exist.
My next response is Learning NLP gives you the ability to take control of your neurology. I now have the users manual for my mind, showing me how to help myself as well as others. Improving my ability to succeed professionally as well as personally.

Learning NLP gives you the key to choice, enabling you to decide who you want to be and how you want to respond- which behaviours you choose to have. Using this technology you will be able to tap into inner resources whenever you need to.
The processes taught on NLP practitioner courses give the students freedom. Freedom to be the best they can be, to live their life to the full. Teaching you how to take control of your thoughts
These techniques are effective for personal change as well as in the business environment. Showing you how to improve your communication skills. Every coaching course I have reviewed has contained various aspects of NLP.

By leaning NLP I have leant the art of asking intelligent questions, how to listen to the answers and respond in whatever way is appropriate in that situation.
I remember when I booked onto my practitioner course I called the office of the training company to ask what I needed to do to prepare for the course. I wanted to ensure that I got the most from my experience. They replied "the only requirement is for an open mind and a willingness to learn how to think outside of your usual way of thinking.

The language of influence ............

One of the things that my corporate clients ask me about the most is information on how to influence people. There is something appealing about being able to say whats needed the magic words that will get people to do whatever you want them to do and want to. To be able to influence that client, your boss to get the best for you and your business.

Words are only part of the equation; you need to be congruent with your message. Your voice, body language plus a few other factors need to be in place for you to become effective an influencing those around you. These ingredients need to be in place to enable the magic words to do their work so that you get the results that you want.

If you have tried out your language skills previously and haven’t got the results you were expecting it was probably due to the fact that one of the other key factors was missing.

Here are my key factors to the language of influence ..........
1. Know what you want. What outcome do you want from this situation?
2. Know what is important to the person/people you want to influence.
3. Build and maintain rapport. Rapport is that feeling that someone understands you, that you are on the same wavelength. Once you have rapport you can then lead the situation.
4. When you are setting out to influence someone ensure that your own baggage is put to one side so that your complete focus is on the other person and the situation at hand.
5. Utilise metaphors. Masters of influence, great salespeople are great story tellers.
6. Develop the ability to use your voice. Your voice is your most powerful tool as a communicator and when you speak you bathe people with the tones of your voice. People listen with their whole body use your voice so that you make them feel good and they will warm to your message.
7. Become fluent in language patterns, practice; experiment with patterns and notice the responses that you get. You’ll be surprised at just how quickly you can become really good at this

http://www.tina-taylor.com/hypnosis_in_business_london.aspx

Qualifying Coaching

Qualifying Coaching

I’m often asked by people what courses do I think they should take. They are considering doing an NLP course but then feel that a qualification in Coaching would be more useful to them; or they tell me “I really enjoy coaching but my coaching training didn’t give me the tools I need to help my clients”.

Many people seem to feel that they need a specific qualification in Coaching before they are able to “be a coach”. When one of my friends husbands was considering taking a course in Life Coaching I was asked to look at the prospectus. What I saw was some very basic NLP techniques. Even though the course was far more expensive than an NLP Practitioner he decided he would be better off with a formal coaching qualification.

After completing his course he found that he didn’t have enough information to be able to give his clients everything they needed and began to come to me for ........................ coaching.

For a few years now I have had similar requests from people who have attended well known coaching schools and yes they are being taught in the basic process of coaching, but without the powerful change tools of NLP.

Obviously if it was only about setting goals and exploring options your clients would already be living the life of their dreams. So what is it that stops them – holds them back? Why can’t they let go of those old patterns of behaviour that stop them from achieve their goals?

I have found that by using NLP techniques in my coaching practice, finding out whats in someone elses map and then coaching them to enrich that map. Enables me to clear any obstacles in their way, helping them change those limiting beliefs which makes goal setting and achieving so much more simpler.

Fears and Anxieties Workshop

I’ve just finished running a two day event with Steve Crabb teaching Practitioners how to be more effective when working with clients with fears and anxieties. So my thoughts currently, have been directed towards this subject and how best to help your clients achieve their goals. The feelings that people have when phobic or anxious are so similar that many people get confused as to whether they have a phobia or anxiety, and they seem to be unaware at how easily these responses are learnt and how quickly the brain can generalise a response.

As we go through life we learn a great many things by experience, things we are not even aware of. An unconscious learning, fear is one of these experiences. A phobia is a demonstration of how quickly we learn an automatic response and each time the response is felt the fear is re-enforced. Your brain works faster than you think so that before you know it you may have gained a phobia.

For years Dr Richard Bandler was told the most difficult thing to get rid off was a phobia. Whilst the psychologists at that time were trying to help people with phobias, usually by giving them drugs occasionally using flooding or desensitisation techniques which weren’t very effective. He thought it would be far better to speak to people who had overcome their fears to see how they did this. He advertised for people who had got rid of their phobias and got their strategies; he found as with most human behaviour that there was a pattern – they all came to a point when they decided they had had enough and then they saw themselves over there and it all seemed so stupid and…………… from these studies the NLP phobia cure was born. I suppose this should now be called the first NLP phobia cure as we are now teaching and experiencing other ways to help people overcome their fears.

Over the years I have been asked many times how I work with people with fears and anxieties, what techniques do I use and so this workshop was designed to answer those questions and give the participants an opportunity to practice.

Over the weekend all the participants were able to review their NLP tool box and how to utilise these techniques; as well as learn some new skills like EMDR and TFT to help increase their success rates with their clients. EMDR got a huge thumbs up from the group, something I will definately teach more of in the future.

On Sunday Glenn and Maureen from Snakes Alive came along with some creatures, so everyone was able to test their work and we all got to meet Glenn’s newest creature and when the group were asked to name her they decided on Tina the Tarantula ......................

Relationships

The word relationship is derived from the Latin relates which means to bring back or restore, yet this term is most commonly used to refer to a state of connectedness between people; especially an emotional connection.

In Webster’s dictionary relationship refers to an aspect or quality that connects two or more things or parts as being or belonging or working together, or as being of the same kind. It is also defined as “the attitude or stance which two or more persons or groups assume towards one another”.

I’ve been thinking a lot about different relationships recently; when I first started to study NLP and Hypnosis I was amazed that there are people using these techniques and skills (some to an incredibly high degree) in some areas of their lives yet fail to utilise them in others. Thus creating incongruence between what they teach and how they behave.

I remember on my Practitioner training with McKenna Breen a decade or so ago, Michael Breen saying “there are people who talk the talk and others who walk the walk, when looking for further training make sure you choose someone who walks the walk”.

At the time I didn’t truly understand what he meant, until now ........................

Solution States

What are problems?

There are problems with problems, sounds silly I know but if you take that statement literally the major problem with problems is that they force us into thinking that something is wrong. When in reality the problematic result that we get is the right results for that particular strategy.

So what is a problem? A problem is a particular result that is different from what you wanted, or the difference between where you are now and where you want to be.

Most of us have been trained from a very early age to respond to problems by avoiding them, learning to move away from them which is very different from moving towards our goals. Looking at problems in a very different way through our perceptual filters – our model of the world.

Defining the problem

The first thing important in solving any problem is knowing your role in the problem. What did you do that created that result? Without a clear idea of your position in any situation you can’t be sure that your plan will work.

First of all get any negative thinking out of the way. Dissociate yourself from the situation and take another look. What is it about this particular event that makes this the right result?

A good place to start is to look at some basic presuppositions

1. The map is not the territory
This is just a way of saying that our beliefs and ideas about people, life and the world aren’t necessarily accurate. They are just a guide. People don’t act on things because of the way those things actually are but from their own personal thoughts of how they are. It may be that you have been following some old rules or guides in your work that are actually getting in your way rather than helping you.

2. All behaviour has some positive intent. People make the best choices they see are available to them at the time.
No matter how strange you may think someone’s behaviour is there is some good reason behind everything that they do. Sometimes it takes a while for it to make sense but with patience it will. Maybe you get stuck at certain times and don’t yet know why or maybe you are thinking of this situation in a particular way. This kind of thinking can make your task very difficult. If you assume that you have a good reason for being stuck, then it can change your way of thinking enough for you to find a better direction.

3. The meaning of the communication is the response you get.
Good communicators take responsibility for getting others to understand them. People respond to what they think they hear, see or understand. Assume that people are responding appropriately, if this isn’t the response you were looking for time to figure out how you got that response and what is needed to get the response you want.

4. There is no failure only feedback
Everything we do, successful or not, can be learned from. If we take results as feedback, they can teach us a lot about how to behave. People who kick themselves for their mistakes usually don’t take the time to carefully analyse the causes and effects; they’re too busy kicking. They don’t learn all they can. Those who don’t learn from their own history usually repeat it.

5. Everyone has all of the internal resources they need
People are resilient they are smart and capable. When they don’t’ seem to be any of these things it is because they are not in touch with their natural internal resources and strengths.

The statements here are designed to help you review how to make changes in your thought processes so that you can deal with “problems” differently, to get to grips with what is needed to achieve those goals.
